Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate
If you do not have health insurance or are choosing not to use health insurance to pay for your care, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges.
You generally have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate when you schedule care at least 3 business days in advance or when you request an estimate before scheduling.
A Good Faith Estimate must be provided in writing and include the expected charges for the items or services reasonably expected to be provided.
If you schedule care 3–9 business days in advance, the estimate is generally due within 1 business day after scheduling. If you schedule care 10 or more business days in advance, it is generally due within 3 business days after scheduling. If you request an estimate before scheduling, it is generally due within 3 business days after your request.
If a bill from a provider or facility is at least $400 more than the Good Faith Estimate from that provider or facility, you may be able to use the federal patient-provider dispute-resolution process.
